Spondylitis

Spondylitis, also known as bamboo joint wind, is currently not well understood in the medical community. It mainly occurs in young people, with initial symptoms of lower back pain. Spondylitis first erodes the sacroiliac joint, gradually spreads upwards, causing calcification of the ligaments of various spinal joints, and the intervertebral spaces disappear on X-rays, resulting in a bamboo-like change in the spine. It is not easy to be discovered in the early stage, and the back pain worsens in the late stage, making it impossible to sit for a long time. Finally, it forms a severe hunchback, stiff neck, and inability to stand upright.

1. What are the causes of spondylitis?

  1. Invasion of wind, cold, and dampness:Due to exposure to rain and water, working in the wind after sweating, living in damp and cold environments, and other changes in climate, the cold and hot alternating, the pathogenic factors of wind, cold, and dampness enter the human body, remain in the meridians and joints, and block the flow of Qi and blood, leading to this disease.

  2. Invasion of damp and heat:The influence of damp-heat in the season, or during the long summer, the combination of damp and heat, or the accumulation of cold and dampness for a long time, leading to heat through suppression, the pathogenic factors of damp and heat invade the meridians and collaterals, leading to this disease.

  3. Blood stasis blocking the meridians:Bruises, contusions, and injuries to the lumbar and dorsal areas result in blood stasis within, blocking the meridians and collaterals, and impeding the flow of Qi and blood.

  4. Deficiency of kidney essence:Deficiency in congenital endowment, excessive fatigue, prolonged illness, aging, irregular sexual activity, and subsequent depletion of kidney essence, malnutrition of the tendons and bones, and the onset of this disease.

2. What complications can spondylitis easily lead to?

Most patients can be well controlled, with a slow progression of the disease. For patients with poor disease control, there may gradually be vertebral fusion, leading to hunchback and deformation. Biomechanically, they are not resistant to impact and may fracture due to minor collisions. Common locations include the cervicothoracic junction or the thoracolumbar junction, which can cause paralysis of the limbs or lower body and dysfunction of urination and defecation.

3. What are the typical symptoms of spondylitis

Spondylitis is not only a disease affecting the spinal joints. The majority of cases can be accompanied by involvement of major joints throughout the body; the involvement of different joints can produce pain and symptoms related to the joint部位. When the hip joint is involved, the patient may report hip pain, but some patients often complain of pain in the inguinal region on the affected side. Early symptoms may include limited hip flexion and movement function. The knee joint may also develop flexion contractures. Although rare, this can also be a cause of disability in this disease. Other toe joints may become red, swollen, and painful, but deformities are rare. Swelling and pain in the finger joints are the least common.

In addition, a few cases may show pain, swelling, or tenderness in the temporomandibular joint, costovertebral joint, and sternoclavicular joint. The involvement of costovertebral joints can also cause chest pain and reduced breathing, and can stimulate the intercostal nerves, causing intercostal neuralgia, especially on the left side.

4. How to prevent spondylitis

  1. Acupoint massage: Acupoint massage can be selected according to symptoms. For example, pressing the bladder meridian and the acupoints of Huantiao, Zhibian, and Jujia on the buttocks with the finger pressing method can relieve stiffness and rigidity of the spine and buttocks. Holding the Wind Pool and the sides of the cervical vertebrae to the Shoulder Well can relieve muscle spasms in the neck and shoulder area.

  2. Pushing the back: The patient takes a prone position and applies a flat push or finger kneading technique on both sides of the spine. Repeat the pushing and kneading several times from top to bottom, with moderate force to make the patient feel sore and tense, for about 10 minutes each time. The effect is to relieve the spasm of soft tissues in the intervertebral joints and costovertebral joints, promote blood circulation, and thereby alleviate pain.

  3. Pay attention to dietary calcium supplementation to ensure normal bone metabolism and achieve an ideal bone calcium peak. Consuming foods rich in high-quality protein and calcium can significantly increase bone density, which is very beneficial for preventing spondylitis.

  4. To prevent the progression of ankylosing spondylitis, it is essential to take medication on time and follow the doctor's instructions. Family and friends need to provide careful care and support to the patient, allowing them to maintain a relaxed and cheerful mood and have the confidence to actively cooperate with the doctor's treatment.

  5. It is important to maintain proper posture and mobility in daily life to prevent the occurrence of kyphosis in patients with ankylosing spondylitis. The onset and development of kyphosis are slow and often go unnoticed, so it is extremely important to pay attention to daily body posture to maintain a good posture. Always remember to keep the body straight, whether standing, sitting, lying down, or sleeping. Sit in a straight-backed chair, do not sit on a sofa; do not sit on a low and soft armchair, especially avoid sitting on a reclining chair. It is recommended to sleep on a hard bed without a pillow or with a thin pillow, which helps to ensure a straight body. For early patients, lying face down twice a day for half an hour can help alleviate the curvature of the trunk. When standing, you can place your feet against the wall, keep your knees straight, lean against the wall with your shoulders and back, look straight ahead, and try to lean back as much as possible since the patient's head cannot touch the wall. Hold for 5 seconds, then relax and repeat several times.

37. 5. What Laboratory Examinations Are Needed for Spondylitis

  35. 1. The main symptoms are repeated pain and stiffness in the sacroiliac joints and the lumbar and thoracic regions, lasting for more than 3 months.

  34. In the early and middle stages, there is a varying degree of limitation in the expansion and activity of the lumbar and thoracic regions, and in the late stages, the spine is rigid and kyphotic.

  33. Laboratory examination: Elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, most negative rheumatoid factor, most positive HLA-B27.

  32. X-ray examination: Early stage, peripheral joint prominence around the spine, unclear sacroiliac joint space; middle stage, limited spinal movement and ankylosis, eroded-like changes in sacroiliac joints, partial ligament and bone destruction, unclear intervertebral disc space; late stage, fusion of sacroiliac joints, bamboo-like changes in the spine, kyphosis, and bamboo-like changes.

6. Dietary Taboos for Spondylitis Patients

It is appropriate to eat some foods that can resist rheumatism and eliminate cold evil, such as garlic, chili, fennel and Sichuan pepper, scallions, etc. Research shows that garlic has bactericidal and antiviral effects, and appropriate use can prevent viral infection. In winter, you can take ginger soup to warm the stomach and dispel cold.
It is appropriate to eat more legumes such as soybeans, soybeans, and black beans, which can have a good auxiliary effect on the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis. Legumes are rich in trace elements and proteins, which can promote the metabolism of muscles, joints, and bones, and have a good effect on the repair of bone injuries. It is also effective for types of rheumatism with heavy body, unfavorable joints, and joint swelling and pain. Soaking black beans in yellow wine can also treat joint pain.

7. Conventional Methods of Western Medicine for Treating Spondylitis

  25. 1. Reduce the bad habit of lying or sitting for a long time, and exercise more to strengthen the lumbar muscles.

  24. Pay attention to rheumatism: According to the season, add clothes and keep warm, especially the waist, to prevent cold and wind.

  23. Sleep Position: When lying flat, use a towel or similar item to support the waist slightly, which will protect the physiological curve of the lumbar spine...

  22. In terms of posture while studying or working, try to keep your chest up and abdomen in, sit up straight. (This posture is difficult for most people to maintain, so you can sit up straight for a while, take a break, and then rest again).
