　　Taenia solium, also known as pork tapeworm, chain tapeworm, and hook tapeworm, is the main human parasitic tapeworm in China. The adults are smaller than Taenia saginata, thin and transparent, with a body length of3～5m. The scolex is nearly spherical, without pigment, 0.6～1mm. The scolex, in addition to having four suckers, has a rostellum at the top, with25～50 small hooks, arranged in two circles. The neck is slender. The number of segments in the strobila is fewer, about hundreds. The mature segments are nearly square. The gravid segments are narrow and long, with fewer uterine branches,7～13in number, distributed in a branched shape. Eggs are difficult to distinguish from those of Taenia saginata.

　　The adult Taenia solium parasites in the human small intestine shed their gravid proglottids from the strobila, which are excreted in the feces. When the intermediate host pig swallows the gravid proglottids in the feces, the eggs are broken by the digestive juices in the duodenum, the oncospheres are released, and they reach various parts of the host's body through the intestinal wall blood flow or lymph. The worm gradually grows, the intermediate cells dissolve to form a cavity filled with fluid, about10weeks to develop into mature cysticerci. The cysticerci in pigs are most abundant in muscles, especially in the adductor muscles. The mature cysticerci are elliptical, about20mm×11mm, milky and semi-transparent. If a person accidentally eats raw or semi-cooked pork containing cysticerci, the cysticercal sac is digested in the stomach, the scolex is everted in the duodenum, adheres to the small intestinal wall and develops into an adult worm, about2～3months, eggs can be found in the feces.

　　The adult worms can survive in the human body for about25years. Humans can also sometimes ingest eggs by eating food contaminated with eggs or by swallowing proglottids that reflux to the pharynx during anthelmintic treatment. Eggs can also develop into cysticerci in the human body, leading to porcine cysticercosis.
