Gan Pi

The disease 'Gan Pi': A condition characterized by frequent attacks of acute pain in the umbilical or lateral hypochondriac region. See 'Wai Tai Mi Yao' Volume Twelve. Caused by disharmony of Qi and blood, obstruction of meridians and collaterals, and accumulation of food and cold congealment. 'Taiping Sheng Hui Fang' Volume Forty-Nine: 'The disease 'Gan Pi' originates from the accumulation of evil cold Qi. 'Gan' refers to the pain in the abdomen near the umbilicus, with each side having a tendinous vessel that causes acute pain, the larger ones resembling an arm, the smaller ones resembling a finger, formed by Qi, resembling a string, and named 'Gan Qi'. 'Pi' refers to the pain on both sides of the hypochondrium, sometimes isolated, hence the name 'Pi'. Although 'Gan' and 'Pi' have different names, the treatments with needles, stones, and pills are the same. All these are due to disharmony of Yin and Yang, obstruction of meridians and collaterals, stagnation of food, and inability to be released, with the evil cold Qi clumping together and not dispersing, hence the name 'Gan Pi'. Treatment should be to activate blood and regulate Qi. Use formulas such as Taoren Wan (Persica Seed Pill), Binglangzi Wan (Areca Seed Pill), Banxia Tang ( 半夏汤 - 半夏Decoction), etc., to disperse accumulation and break up knots. If coldness causes pain, it is advisable to expel cold and disperse knots, using Cong Bai San (Scallion White Powder) and taking Jiming Wan (Cockcrow Pill) again. If there is pain in the hypochondrium and abdomen, with disharmony of the liver and spleen, it is advisable to soothe the liver and harmonize the spleen, using Muxiang Shunqi San (Costus Root and Qi Powder) without Atractylodes, adding Yujin (Cyperus rotundus Rhizome) and Yanhusuo (Corydalis). See also the entries for 'Pi' and 'Gan'.
